Emerge (Collages)

A significant portion of my work as an artist has been the making of collages. From 1984 to 2003, I amassed a large body of work. My collages have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at aspace gallery in Southampton (2003); Southampton Institute of Higher Education – now Southampton Solent University – (2001); and the Arts Institute Bournemouth (1999). They have also been exhibited several times at Chester’s Grosvenor museum.

The group exhibition Emerge featured artists on the AA2A (Artists Access to Art colleges) project at the University of Chester, and staff from the Art and Design department. My work was exhibited in a room within the gallery space.

My collages are made using the transparent adhesive tape Sellotape. I discovered that Sellotape allows me to pull parts of an image from a print magazine; from these fragments of print material I can build up a picture. My collage pictures have concentrated on the female figure taken from a combination of glamour (‘girlie’) and fashion magazines. This has produced fleshy figures that are a distortion of the female anatomy.
