End of the Season
End of the Season was the final, and most comprehensive, exhibition about my family holidays in North Wales. This was a touring show that started at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester, went on to the Vallum Gallery at the University of Cumbria (Carlisle), and finished at Weaver Hall Museum and Work House in Northwich. For each venue there were slight changes to content and display.
The exhibition at the Grosvenor Museum coincided with the beginning of my relationship with the publisher Café Royal Books (CRB). Three photozines of my photographs of Rhyl were published over 2014/15: Ocean Beach Rhyl; Rhyl Seafront; and Rhyl Caravan Parks (the fourth CRB, simply titled, Rhyl was published at a later date).
The exhibition was made up of twenty black & white, digital photographic prints, many of which appeared in the CRB photobooks; alongside these works were a number of my silver gelatin prints of the British seaside. These were being shown for the first time.
I repeated the wall drawing of the street map of Rhyl (from my 2006 exhibition) at the Grosvenor Museum, but for this exhibition drew onto the wall during the show, and replaced street names with the names of British seaside towns. Included in the exhibition were family cine films of holidays in North Wales, and display cabinets of printed ephemera: postcards, guidebooks, and snapshots.
Artist and printmaker, David Ferry, contributed one of his artworks – an altered book – for display. Ferry’s photomontages had been an important influence on this specific project. The title End of the Season refers to the completion of this project and the end of my own family holidays at Rhyl.
