Alien Resident: Photographing San Diego, 1986 to 1987

This book accompanied the 2020 exhibition ‘Alien Resident: San Diego Photographs 1986–1987’ at Contemporary Art Space Chester (CASC), and was funded by the University of Chester. The title, Alien Resident, alludes to my legal status as a resident alien in the USA, but also to my own situation as someone out of place in a strange land.

The 54-page book includes essays by Mike Pinnington, editor of the online magazine The Double Negative, Julia García Hernández, and myself. Mike Pinnington makes an imaginative connection by reading my photographs in relation to Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘Psycho’ (1960). My essay makes a similar link as I take on the role of the TV detective Columbo to provide a biographical account of my residency in California. There are thirty-nine photographs, most of which had not been previously published.
