Blackpool 1980s–1990s

I was born in St Helens, an industrial town noted for glass production, coal mining and a rugby club. Throughout my childhood, holidays in Blackpool were a feature of my family’s annual routine. As a young art student in the early 1980s, I was looking for subject matter to make pictures. As an antidote to the grim post-industrial landscape that surrounded me, I started to photograph Blackpool. As the years progressed I made regular trips to the resort, which has resulted in a considerable archive of images.

My photographs from the 1980s through to the late 1990s concentrate on the Golden Mile – the distance between the north and south piers – as well as the Pleasure Beach amusement park that is located on South Shore. Blackpool is constantly evolving so, although the significant landmarks remain, I have recorded many attractions that have changed or disappeared.
