All that Glitters
In the early 1990s, I had the opportunity to take photographs of models in the studio. These models were a local dance troupe that required promotional photographs for their business as cabaret-style dancers. Whilst another photographer took the photographs that the dancers wanted, I concentrated on making my own pictures. Maybe less flattering in relation to the angle of the shots and the cropping of the frames, what I documented was the group of girls getting into pose or relaxing the pose between shutter clicks. What was revealed is awkward realism.
These photographs have been revitalised by the photobook publisher Simon Robinson at Fistful of Books. Through the application of colour filters and solarisation, the images take on a new meaning. The title of this book is a playful reference to the artifice of studio photography and the fiction of the glamour image. All that glitters is not gold.
