NYC–19XX
This was the first publication of my photographs of New York. The pictures were taken in the mid-1990s when I made two brief visits to the city. New York presented a very different America than my previous experience of residency in California. New York is a city of verticals as opposed to horizontals; busy streets as opposed the sparely spaces in San Diego; and dark buildings lit by the cold weather of the winter months when I visited. I avoided the tourist sights, although a few landmarks do appear in this book.
The opening picture in this book has a view of a cavernous street that looks toward the Chrysler, while the closing image looks skyward to the vapour trail of an airplane flying over the city. The cover of the book is black with a photograph of cloud steam floating across the picture. These images set the scene for a gritty interpretation of the NYC.
