Newport Snow 1985
The photographs for Newport Snow were taken in the winter of 1985 during the second year of my undergraduate course in Fine Art at Newport College of Art, South Wales. I photographed the city following a heavy snowfall which had transformed Newport’s everyday landscape.
This CRB book stands as an allegory for my own dilemma: I was searching for a way forward in my practice as I had reached a point of stagnation. During a tutorial with the head of Fine Art, Roy Ascott, I was advised to go out to take photographs of whatever was of interest. Subconsciously, my photographs of walkways, bridges and gates leading through the city mirrored my own mental state which had me feeling snowed in and looking for a way ahead. These pictures were a turning point for me, signalling my commitment to photography.
