Ocean Beach Rhyl
Ocean Beach Rhyl marks the beginning of my exploration into my archive of photographs that dates from the early 1980s. This publication is one of four Café Royal Books dedicated to the topic of the seaside town of Rhyl, North Wales, and is part of my larger project that documented family holidays in Rhyl.
My grandparents owned two large static caravans that were sited in Towyn, a small town close to the west of Rhyl that is dominated by caravan parks. These family-owned caravans provided my parents with affordable week-long holidays. Consequently, as a child, I became very familiar with the resort and its surroundings. In the early 1980s, I began to photograph this area, but in particular Rhyl seafront. A major attraction was the fairground Ocean Beach. This fairground was opened in 1954 and later demolished in 2007. Since 2017 the site has been occupied by the Marina Quay retail park.
