Rhyl Caravan Parks

The caravan parks are located just outside of Rhyl, to the east and the west of the town. These sites have their own distinct identity with camp shops, social clubs, kiosks and amusement arcades. Many people view caravans as an eyesore – a blot on the landscape. These residences are temporary structures that are constantly replaced. I enjoy the formal qualities of the rectilinear caravans and the architecture of buildings that support the needs of the holiday-makers.

During the 1950s and through to the 1970s, my grandparents owned two static caravans that were sited at Cambria caravan park in Towyn. For me, and my family, the caravan became a home away from home – a place to escape to. I photographed these caravan parks in the early 1980s, and a bit later. Unlike the seaside resorts that the parks serve, the caravan parks continue to thrive and have become second homes for some of the residents.
