Rhyl Seafront
Rhyl was once a popular seaside resort. Its promenade was a bustling environment with landmarks such as the Pavilion and the Floral Hall that featured on postcards and in guidebooks. During the 1960s and 1970s, my family holidayed in the town. By the early 1980s, I had started to photograph the seafront. I was retracing the footsteps of my family’s walk from the town centre, marked by the large Woolworths department store near the clock tower, to the Ocean Beach fairground and Marine Lake at the west side of the resort.
Rhyl seafront has been significantly redeveloped since my family holidays. Key landmarks have been demolished and, as with many other seaside resorts, its amusements and other attractions also went. My photographs document some aspects of this decline. This selection published by CRB is part of a larger archive of images that records a much-altered landscape.
