San Diego Topographics 2 1986–1987

This is the second Café Royal Books photobook titled San Diego Topographics. Combined, the two books provide a limited introduction to my archive of photographs of San Diego. Noticeable in this book is the focus on relatively anonymous buildings, except for the distinctive Geisel Library at the University of California San Diego.

The influence of the New Topographics movement and the work of Lewis Baltz is more apparent in this CRB publication as each image has a blunt matter-of-factness. In contrast to CRB San Diego Topographics 1, which had photographs of the California beaches, there are no people present in these images. Although San Diego has a large population, the scale of this landscape and the heat of the sun leaves the streets relatively empty. This circumstance aligns with my own interest in place rather than people.
